The hit Korean drama 'Marry My Husband,' which captivated audiences on tvN last year, is returning in a Japanese adaptation that premiered worldwide on June 27.

Amazon Prime Video officially announced via its social media channels that the Amazon Original series 'Marry My Husband' will be released globally on June 27. Studio Dragon also confirmed the news, stating, “The Japanese adaptation is set to premiere soon.”

Unlike a simple remake, the Japanese version has been newly reimagined based on the original web novel and tailored to fit Japanese cultural and societal contexts. The adaptation is a Korea-Japan joint project co-produced by Japanese production giant Shochiku, CJ ENM, and Studio Dragon, raising expectations as a global collaboration.

The original Korean drama aired from January to February 2024 and achieved outstanding success. It recorded the highest average ratings for a Monday-Tuesday drama in tvN history (9.2%) and peaked at 12% viewership for its final episode. It also ranked No. 1 in TV and OTT buzz for seven consecutive weeks, reflecting its immense popularity.

'Marry My Husband' also became the first Korean drama to top Amazon Prime Video’s Global Daily TV Show rankings. It reached No. 1 in 67 countries, including Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Brazil. The drama also broke into the top 10 in Western countries like the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Germany, showcasing the power of the Korean Wave.

The story follows a woman who is betrayed by her husband and best friend, dies, and is given a second chance to return to the past to seek revenge and rebuild her life. Its fast-paced plot and the stellar performances of Park Min Young, Na In Woo, Lee Yi Kyung, and Song Ha Yoon captivated viewers episode after episode.

In the Japanese version, actress Koshiba Fuka, known for her roles in 'Ōoku' and 'Fermat’s Cuisine,' will play the lead originally portrayed by Park Min Young. A rising star who won the Elan d'or Newcomer Award in 2024, Koshiba previously starred in the Japanese remake of 'She Was Pretty,' creating a connection with Korean entertainment. Actor Sato Takeru, beloved for his role in the 'Rurouni Kenshin' film series, has been cast as the male lead.

The series is directed by Ahn Gil Ho, acclaimed for 'Stranger,' 'Memories of the Alhambra,' and Netflix’s 'The Glory.' With Korea’s top-tier production staff working alongside Japanese actors and crew, this global project is generating high expectations.

The two lead actors visited Korea on June 26 for the official press conference. Studio Dragon’s lead producer Sohn Ja Young, who participated in the planning of both the Korean and Japanese versions, was also in attendance, signaling the beginning of this cross-border project.

Amazon stated, “This is our first Japanese original project in collaboration with Korea’s top studios CJ ENM and Studio Dragon. We hope viewers look forward to Marry My Husband, brought to life by an all-star cast and best-in-class production.”

The Japanese version, consisting of 10 episodes, is now drawing attention to see if it can match the success of the Korean original and how global viewers will respond to the newly reimagined story.
