Yeon Sang Ho’s ‘Colony’ Earns 7-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes as Jun Ji Hyun Returns to the Big Screen After 11 Years
by K-Soul · allkpopA new Korean zombie film featuring director Yeon Sang Ho’s expanded zombie universe is drawing global attention after heating the Cannes Film Festival.
The director’s latest film, ‘Colony,’ officially invited to the Midnight Screenings section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, successfully held its world premiere at the Lumière Grand Theatre on the night of May 15 in France. Despite the late-night screening time, all 2,300 seats sold out early, proving the film’s explosive buzz.
In a particularly emotional moment, this year’s Cannes jury president Park Chan Wook made a surprise appearance on the red carpet to warmly support his fellow filmmakers. After the screening ended and the credits rolled, the audience erupted in cheers and delivered a seven-minute standing ovation, signaling strong praise from international viewers.
One of the film’s biggest highlights is the “upgraded new species of zombies” introduced by Yeon Sang Ho. The story follows survivors trapped inside a quarantined building after a mysterious outbreak, as they confront infected beings evolving in unpredictable ways. Unlike traditional zombies, the infected in ‘Colony’ move collectively and continuously update information, creating highly unpredictable behavior patterns and intense suspense.
The second major attraction is its star-studded cast led by Jun Ji Hyun alongside Koo Kyo Hwan, Ji Chang Wook, Shin Hyun Been, Kim Shin Rok, and Go Soo. Marking her return to the big screen for the first time in 11 years, Jun Ji Hyun commands attention with her presence alone. The ensemble cast, each portraying survivors with different backstories, adds emotional depth and dramatic weight to the film.
The final key point is the film’s distinctive production design, particularly the infected characters’ eerie signature movements. Created through collaborations with dancers, combined with action choreography from martial arts director Heo Myeong Haeng’s team and realistic special makeup effects from Hwang Hyo Gyun’s crew, the visuals stimulate the senses with overwhelming intensity.
Blending striking characters with a powerful story, ‘Colony’ is scheduled to premiere in South Korea on May 21.
