Apple's current 25W MagSafe charger may be updated to a 45W version

iPhone 17 could get much higher wattage MagSafe charging

New regulatory filings show that Apple has produced two updated MagSafe charging pucks, which both support the Qi 2.2 standard that means the iPhone 17 could theoretically charge wirelessly at almost double the speed previously possible.

The new chargers are an update to the existing 25W MagSafe charger that was released alongside the iPhone 16 range. The Qi 2.2 standard supports a maximum 50W charging speed, though these two new models appear to be rated at 45W.

As first spotted by 91mobiles in a filing with the Taiwanese regulatory authority's NCC database, the two chargers are the same design as the previous 25W model. They are round pucks, measuring approximately 100mm or just under four inches.

The difference between the two editions, with model numbers A3502 and A3503, is the length of their included, braided cable. The A3502 version is 1 meter long, while the A3503 is 2 meters.

This regulatory filing shows images of the chargers, plus some of the required accompanying paperwork. That paperwork shows that the chargers have been tested with two iPhone models, specifically the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 16.

Apple introduced its MagSafe wireless charging with the iPhone 12 range in 2020, so it appears likely that all iPhones since then will be able to use the new chargers.

It also appears possible that the iPhone 11 will support the new chargers. But it will charge using the Qi standard, without the MagSafe feature which magnetically attaches the charger to the phone.

While the chargers may support up to 45W charging, though, the speeds will depend on the model of iPhone, with older ones charging more slowly.

Note that MagSafe was also dropped from the iPhone 16e, although that can still use wireless Qi chargers.
