Apple could adopt faster Qi 2.2 wireless charging for the iPhone 17 lineup

Christian Zibreg ∙ June 5, 2025

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup should support the faster Qi 2.2 wireless charging protocol that has yet to be officially certified.

911Mobiles discovered regulatory filings on Taiwan’s NCC certification website for two unreleased MagSafe chargers with model numbers A3503 and A3502 that support the Qi 2.2 protocol. Like existing MagSafe chargers, these upcoming accessories sport a white charging puck and braided cables one or two meters long.

Qi 2.2 supports wireless charging speeds up to 50W, or more than three times what the current Qi 2.1 protocol allows, but Apple may choose to limit charging speed for safety reasons. For what it’s worth, the new charger seems to support up to 45W (15V x 3A) when used with a compatible USB-C Power Delivery charger.

iPhone 17 may adopt faster Qi 2.2 wireless charging

Tim Hardwick, MacRumors:

Testing documents show the chargers work with devices ranging from the iPhone 16 back to the iPhone 11, indicating the Qi 2.2 pucks will have broad compatibility with existing devices, but charging speeds are going to be limited when using older models. Devices looking to take advantage of the faster charging speeds will need a corresponding advanced charging chip, similar to Samsung’s Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC).

Apple supports 15W Qi 2 wireless charging on the iPhone 12 and later. Qi 2.2 support doesn’t require new hardware and will come as a software update for existing iPhones. Apple seems to be an early adopter; there are currently no Qi 2.2 phones, chargers and accessories available. But if Apple and major Android makers support Qi 2.2, expect compatible accessories to start rolling out this fall.

iPhones currently support the Qi 2 protocol at 15W, but MagSafe offers faster wireless charging speeds. On the iPhone 16 lineup, for example, MagSafe can charge at up to 25W when paired with a 30W charger. However, Apple currently does not support the Qi 2.1 standard.

Apple is a member of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which develops the open wireless charging standard, called Qi. In fact, Apple contributed its MagSafe specification to the initial Qi 2.0 protocol to enable MagSafe-like perks such as magnetic snapping and alignment, more efficient magnetic wireless charging and faster charging speeds up to 15W.
