If your iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro is freezing on a whim or restarting randomly, Apple’s upcoming iOS 18.1 update will fix it.
Apple has confirmed in the release notes for iOS 18.1 that the update “fixes an issue where iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro models may unexpectedly restart.” I’ve been having this problem, but I didn’t make too much fuss about it.
However, a quick visit to online support forums reveals dozens of complaints from iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max owners. Typically, an iPhone would either crash and restart randomly or start performing slower and slower until, eventually, it restarted.

Posters on Apple Support Communities and Reddit note that there’s no workaround for this issue. No particular app seems to be causing this, with iPhones crashing in all sorts of situations, including when in StandBy Mode, which causes the device to reboot to the Home Screen. Some replacement units exhibit the issue as well.
Many complaints mention the inability to redownload apps and data after restarting an iPhone from an iCloud backup. Apple has not detailed what’s causing the crashing, but some say that restoring the device from a saved backup on their Mac or setting it up as new resolved the problem.
iOS 18.1 will also bring other fixes and security patches, including for an issue in the built-in Podcast app where unplayed episodes are marked as played and another one where videos recorded at 4K 60 while the phone is warm could experience stutter while scrubbing the video playback in Photos (hey, I experienced that, too!).
If you use digital car keys, iOS 18.1 will address a problem where your digital car key may not unlock or start a vehicle with passive entry after restoring from a backup or transferring directly from another iPhone.
