Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant at the Washington-area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar early Monday, part of what the Justice Department called an ongoing federal investigation. Fox News Digital first reported the raid, citing a source familiar with the move.
A DOJ spokesperson said the action was “part of an ongoing federal investigation” carried out under “a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice.” The outlet reported it followed a criminal fraud investigation into the Minnesota lawmaker’s immigration paperwork, which her late father filled out when she was a child.
President Donald Trump, who has portrayed the Somali American community as a threat to Minnesota, has frequently targeted Omar, who was born in Somalia. She has called his focus on her an “unhealthy and creepy obsession.”
In February, Trump said Omar and fellow Muslim Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan should be “institutionalized” and sent back to “where they came from.” He has previously called Somalis “garbage,” drawing criticism from civil rights advocates.
Last month, a Minnesota man who squirted vinegar on Omar was sentenced to one year and two months in prison for assaulting a federal official. Anthony James Kazmierczak admitted he attacked her because he disagreed with her progressive politics.
