A Community Member Shot the 16-Year-Old Gunman at an Oregon Elementary School Before Police Arrived. Three Children and a Teacher Were Killed

The first 911 call came in at 12:59 p.m. Thursday. The school was locked down by 1:01, and the first Bend officers reached Silver Rail Elementary at 1:02. By then the shooting was already over.
Police Chief Mike Krantz said officers arrived to learn the 16-year-old had been shot by a community member who saw him enter the school, pursued him inside and engaged him. The gunman was dead. He had gotten in by firing at the locked doors.
Police have not named the person who stopped him. The Oregonian reported it was a parent of a student at the school and called it Oregon’s first deadly mass shooting at an elementary school.
Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher were killed. Critically injured were a 54-year-old teacher and a 7-year-old student.
After seeing the gunman, fifth-grade teacher Kathy Sheil Smith alerted the office and moved her students into a corner of the classroom. “Some kids were praying, some kids were consoling other kids,” she said.
Superintendent Steven Cook thanked the staff who shielded students: “You did what no one should ever be asked to do.” One parent described the wait to pick up her child as “the worst three hours of our lives.”
All Bend-La Pine schools were closed Friday, and activities and athletic events were canceled. Regional crisis counselors would be available in the coming days for students, families, district employees and others in the community. Gov. Tina Kotek ordered flags lowered to half-staff Friday.
