Ghana – The Government of Ghana and Jubilee House have released the names of all eight people who died in a tragic military helicopter crash on Tuesday, August 6.
The crash involved a Ghana Armed Forces Z9 helicopter which went down in the Sikaman area near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.
The aircraft had departed from Accra at 9:12am and was en route to Obuasi when the incident occurred. The helicopter was carrying high-profile government officials and military personnel.
Full list of those who died in the crash
In a statement released by the Department of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, the following individuals were confirmed dead:
- Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
- Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP) – Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
- Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture
- Dr Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Mr Samuel Aboagye – Former parliamentary candidate
- Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala – Pilot
- Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu – Co-pilot
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Crew member
The government has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country in honour of the deceased until further notice.
Investigation into cause of crash underway
Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, Acting Director General of Public Relations, confirmed that investigations have begun to determine the cause of the crash.
“The Ghana Armed Forces is working closely with relevant authorities to uncover what led to this unfortunate event,” she said.
As tributes pour in, many across Ghana have expressed grief and shock over the loss. The victims are being remembered for their service to the country, both in politics and in the military.
The crash marks one of the most devastating aviation tragedies in recent Ghanaian history.
Ghana President gives order
President John Mahama of Ghana on Wednesday, August 6, ordered all national flags to be lowered, in honour of victims of the tragic military helicopter crash.
As reported by Ghana's TV3, President Mahama ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast to mourn the passing of the prominent individuals.
GhanaWeb also noted the presidential directive regarding the national flags.
Wednesday’s crash was one of Ghana’s worst air disasters in more than a decade. In May 2014, a service helicopter crashed off the coast, killing at least three people. In 2021, a cargo plane overran the runway in Accra and crashed into a bus full of passengers, killing at least 10 people.
Air India: DNA samples to help identify victims
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that some families broke down in uncontrollable tears as they were asked to submit DNA samples to help identify their loved ones who died in the tragic Air India crash.
