Rivers Govt Implements New Higher Minimum Wage, Bank Alerts Trigger Jubilation

Just over a month after approving a new minimum wage, the Rivers state government has reportedly commenced implementing the N85,000 it promised.
According to The Guardian, public school teachers and other state workers said they had received their November salary alert, which included the new wage amount.
Chukwuma Osunna, the chairman of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Rivers state chapter, confirmed the payment of the new salary structure in an interview.
He also praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for fulfilling his earlier promise to civil servants.
“As of today, November 27, 2024, I can confirm that he [the governor] has paid the N85,000 new minimum wage to workers and the workers are happy.
Osunna also mentioned a recent meeting under the joint council which included the Head of Service.
“We... saw the salary chart and confirmed that the N85,000 is well calculated and implemented in the November salary of workers. So, payment started today (Wednesday, November 27) and by tomorrow (Thursday, November 28), other banks will start to pay too.”
N85k minimum wage: Rivers workers happy
Notably, a cross-section of some River state workers were seen celebrating upon receiving alerts of reviewed packages in their November salaries, as Governor Fubara promised.
The workers said receiving the minimum wage increment would help boost their morale.

Uzodimma approves new minimum wage
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Imo state governor Hope Uzodimma announced the approval of a new minimum wage for state workers, which was N70,000.
The decision, which reportedly followed extensive consultations with labour leaders, 'aimed to enhance the welfare of workers and pensioners across the state'.
