FCT, Abuja - Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned from his position as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ganduje cited health reasons for his decision, stating that he needs to focus on his well-being.
As reported by Premium Times, the former Kano State governor resigned on Friday, June 27, 2025 with immediate effect.
Ganduje was appointed as APC chairman in August 2023 following the resignation of former national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu from North-Central zone.
Why Ganduje resiged as APC national chairman
According to Leadership, Ganduje's resignation is a strategic move by the APC to calm rising discontent among stakeholders from the North-Central zone.
The North-Central zone has consistently demanded the national chairman position be returned to the region.
It is gathered that one of the APC's national vice chairmen will succeed Ganduje until a substantive chairman is elected at the APC national convention scheduled for December 2025.
The newspaper quoted the Daily Nigerian that a party source said:
“The pressure has been mounting for months. Key stakeholders, especially from the North-Central, have not relented in their push to reclaim the position. Ganduje has now agreed to step aside in the party’s interest, especially as it begins early strategies for 2027.”
Insiders said Ganduje’s resignation was being positioned as a “unifying gesture” that will help stabilise the party, address zoning concerns, and reposition the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political sources said preparations for a formal handover were already underway.
However, no official statement has been issued by Ganduje or the party as of the time of filling this report.
APC group hails Ganduje over Tinubu's running mate saga
Recall that the APC Solidarity and Development Forum (APC-SDF) strongly condemned the attack on Ganduje and north-east vice chairman Comrade Mustapha Salihu during the recent APC North East Summit.
The group described the incident as "unwarranted" and "thuggish," and demanded an apology from those responsible.
The APC group expressed outrage over the attempt to intimidate and silence Ganduje and Salihu for exercising their right to free speech.
APC's Ganduje sends message to Atiku, others
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the APC north-west zone emerged from its latest stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna state on Saturday, May 17, endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of 2027 elections.
The APC heavyweights who attended the meeting included Ganduje, governors from the geopolitical zone; ministers; and federal lawmakers.
In his speech, Ganduje noted that President Tinubu is committed to developing the north-west, the entire northern region, as well as the nation, Nigeria.
