President Bola Tinubu's minister of power, Bayo Adelabu, has announced plans to resign from his position after securing the consent of his boss to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo state.
This comes hours after President Tinubu sacked Wale Edun, the minister of finance and coordinating minister for the economy and his counterpart in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa.
It was learned that the decision was reached after the minister held a meeting with the president on Tuesday, April 21, at the presidential villa in Abuja. Adelabu reportedly presented a comprehensive briefing on his administration in the power sector over the last two and a half years.
This was disclosed in a statement by his special adviser on strategic communication and media relations, Bolaji Tunji, who noted that the major part of the meeting involved the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and the Strategic Implementation Plan.

Nigerians react to Adelabu's pending resignation
However, the announcement from Adelabu's camp has generated various reactions from Nigerians. Below are some of their comments:
Salami Ayobamiji explained why the power sector continues to have problems:
"If you like to appoint Jesus as the power minister, it won't solve any issue. No serious investor is bringing their money into an illiquid sector. Nigerians can't afford a cost-reflective tariff. Even the ones that are on it are running. FG that can bridge the gap via subsidy is broke too."
Adetunji Adewolu called for an effective power reform:
"Resignation talk in Nigeria’s power sector isn’t just politics; it’s a reality check. If leadership changes but the same issues remain, such as gas supply, infrastructure gaps, and funding, then nothing really changes. The real question: will this shift fix the system or just the headlines?"
Muyi said the minister should not have resigned to contest:
"Resigning to contest in an election he does not have a chance of winning is foolish, especially as he is not popular among the people of Oyo State."
Wale Ibrahim projected what could happen with Adelabu's resignation:
"What I could figure out here is that he has a backdated resignation letter, before the deadline. The letter will be published after he resigns. He will then support with a statement that the president wanted to submit a report, which is the reason he delayed his exit."
