Lagos Island, Lagos state - Leading financial services institution, United Capital, on Thursday morning, September 18, confirmed that it lost six members of staff to the Afriland Towers fire incident.

The company disclosed:

“It is with profound grief that the management and staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

“Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void. We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as provide all the support we can to them during this most difficult time."

United Capital added:

“In this moment of untold grief, we stand together in solidarity, drawing strength from one another as we navigate this period. May the souls of the departed rest in peace."

Legit.ng reports that Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial property on Lagos Island, houses offices and businesses in one of the city’s busiest districts.

Afriland Properties, managers of Afriland Towers, had earlier confirmed the blaze in a statement.

Friends and relatives mourned colleagues caught in the blaze on Tuesday, September 16.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the fire began in the building’s basement inverter room before smoke spread quickly through several floors.

Videos posted online showed trapped occupants smashing windows for air. Some leapt onto foamy materials spread below, while others clung to ledges until ladders were raised for their escape.

By late afternoon, firefighters reported that the blaze had been contained, although checks on the building continued into the evening.

Attempts to reach the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for confirmation of United Capital's disclosure were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.

Lagos is a major economic hub in Nigeria, and is home to around 17.5 to 21 million people.

Fires are common in Nigeria, where petrol and diesel powers electricity generators in homes and work places.

Lagos fire: FIRS confirms 4 deaths

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) confirmed that four of its staff members lost their lives in the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers.

In a statement issued, Dare Adekanmbi, media aide to Zacch Adedeji, the FIRS chairman, said the deceased officers were carrying out their duties on the sixth and seventh floors when the incident occurred.
