Breaking: Kano Governor Finally Pick Deputy, Announces Next Move

Kano state Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has picked Murtala Sule Garo as the new deputy governor of the state. The development came following the resignation of Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

It was also reported that his name has been forwarded to the Kano state House of Assembly for screening.

Recall that Gwarzo fell apart with the governor after he defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former deputy governor had refused to join the governor in the APC, putting him under pressure and the state House of Assembly subsequently began an impeachment proceedings against him. He resigned from his position amid the storm and resigned from the NNPP, then joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Daily Trust reported that Mustapha Muhammad, the chief press secretary to Governor Yusuf, in a statement, announced the nomination of Garo to fill the position of the deputy governor.

Muhammad explained that the nomination was in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), adding that it empowered the governor to nominate a deputy governor once the vacancy is available.

However, the nomination has started generating reactions from Nigerians. Below are some of their reactions:

Hon Nuhu Sada question the criteria for Garo's nomination:

"This move raises serious questions about transparency and the direction of leadership in Kano. The people deserve clarity on the criteria behind this choice and assurance that competence not political convenience is driving such decisions. We will be watching closely and holding them accountable."

Adetunji Adewolu called for effectiveness of the deputy governor's office:

'Screening is just the beginning; what matters most is performance after the appointment. Kano people will be watching closely to see if this move brings real value on the ground."

Umar Balarabe raised a question about the nomination of Garo as the deputy governor:

"Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor nominee? You sought to remove your deputy over an alleged ₦2 billion fraud, yet now you are nominating someone you once accused of misappropriating over ₦80 billion. Is this what ‘Kano First’ means?"

Enigma criticised the appointment:

"Never say never in politics... You can even work with your political foe so far your interest aligns with them."

Abdrzqdanhasiya said Garo was once accused of corruption:

"In June 2024, the Kano State Government filed seven counts against Mr Garo and his two brothers, Mustapha Sule-Garo and Mohammed Sule-Garo, over the alleged diversion of N2.8 billion in local government funds."
