Kwankwaso vs Yusuf: Kano's political tension

The election came at a time when there was political tension and a battle for power between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his estranged political godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Yusuf and Kwankwaso made a statement in the 2023 elections on the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), when the party won the governorship election in Kano and came fourth in the presidential election, but they fell apart ahead of the 2027 general election.

Governor Yusuf defected to the ruling APC, while Kwankwaso joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and then the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The by-election was expected to be a testing ground for Kwankwaso and the NDC against the governor and the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Unfortunately, the NDC did not take part in the election based on the information released by INEC. The absence of the NDC has got Nigerians talking about the readiness of the new opposition party ahead of the general elections, considering the fact that Kwankwaso is not the party's vice presidential candidate in the 2027 poll.
