FCT, Abuja - On Monday morning, August 18, Senate President Godswill Akpabio returned to the country after what he described as a brief vacation in London.
Akpabio returned on Monday amid reports that he was critically ill and admitted to a hospital abroad.
The Senate president, who had attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva between July 29 and 31, proceeded to London afterwards. His absence triggered speculations suggesting he was battling a serious health challenge.
However, a statement issued by his media aide, Jackson Udom, disclosed that the Senate President arrived in Nigeria on Monday morning at about 4:00 a.m. and was received at the Presidential Wing by senators, aides, and supporters, The Sun reported.
The statement added that while speaking with journalists on arrival, Akpabio dismissed the rumours and assured Nigerians of a more vigorous legislative agenda when the Senate resumes.
“We are ready for robust legislative engagements on resumption,” he was quoted as saying, while justifying the participation of a strong Nigerian delegation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union conference in Geneva.

Interestingly, Akpabio, in a post shared on his Facebook page, expressed excitement over his trip.
Akpabio confirmed the short vacation in London and ignored the growing speculations about is ill-health.

"I'M HAPPY TO BE BACK HOME, AFTER A BRIEF VACATION
"This morning at about 4am, I arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport from London. While outside the country, I attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva between July 29 and 31st, after which I headed to London for a short vacation.
"Let me assure Nigerians of robust legislative engagements on our resumption. Our presence at the global parliamentary gathering in Geneva was a strong one. Our voices were heard loud and clear, through my self and my brother and Speaker House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. We will continue to work assiduously in the overall interest of our people through effective collaboration with the other arms of government."

Akpabio wins most peaceful man award
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Senator Godswill Akpabio, won the 2025 International Peace Award for championing peace and diplomacy by the Global Peace Movement International (GPMI).
GPMI praised his role in restoring Nigeria’s membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union after 50 years, marking a diplomatic milestone.
The award ceremony was set for August 2025, honouring his leadership and commitment to unity both internationally and within Nigeria.
