Paris Saint-Germain claimed the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, beating Aston Villa 2-1 to secure consecutive titles in the competition and reignite debate over the 2026 Ballon d'Or.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave the French club the lead in the 20th minute with a clinical finish, with Desire Doue picking up the assist. Villa responded before the break through 17-year-old Brian Madjo, who levelled to send the sides into the second half on equal terms.

Doue, who had already played a key role in the opener, proved decisive again after the interval, scoring the winner that PSG held onto for the full 90 minutes to lift the trophy.

The victory confirmed a familiar pattern for the Paris club, who also won the Super Cup last season by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in a penalty shootout. Back-to-back titles in the competition underline the consistency PSG have shown in European football since claiming the UEFA Champions League.

Beyond the trophy itself, the result has added a new dimension to the Ballon d'Or conversation ahead of this year's ceremony.

The strong performances from PSG's attacking players across the Super Cup final have pushed the award's odds in their favour, with Ousmane Dembele widely regarded as the player with the most to gain from the club's continued success.

The race for the prestigious individual honour remains wide open, however. Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Rodri are all considered serious contenders following their performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Whether PSG's European silverware is enough to tip the balance towards Dembele or his teammates will likely depend on how voters weigh club form against international tournament contributions when the time comes to cast their ballots.
