Anti-party Saga: Abia APC Announces Verdict on Uzor Kalu, Chris Nkwonta

The Abia state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has declared that the party has pardoned Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chris Nkwonta, and other members following recent anti-party allegations them.

Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North, and Chris Nkwonta, member representing Ukwa East/Ukwu East Federal Constituency, faced backlash in some quarters recently over remarks considered to be against the party.

They duo were said to have made statements that showed support for Alex Otti, the governor of Abia state under the Labour Party (LP).

Abia: APC takes action on Kalu, Nkwonta

In a communiqué issued on August 10, 2026, and obtained by Legit.ng, the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party claimed that Kalu, in an interview on a national television station, reportedly declared that “Governor Otti of the Labour Party will win the governorship election.”

The communiqué also claimed Nkwonta publicly stated that he would vote for Otti of the Labour Party in the 2027 governorship election at a meeting with Oluremi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu.

The party, among others, asked them to tender an unreserved public “apology to the All Progressives Congress, its leadership, members and supporters in Abia State within seven (14) days from the date of this communiqué”.

It added:

“Failure by either of the two individuals to comply with this demand within the stipulated seven (14) days will leave the Party with no option than to constitute a disciplinary committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding their respective statements and actions and make appropriate disciplinary recommendations to the competent organs of the Party.”

Anti-party: Abia APC shares update on Kalu, Nkwonta

But speaking at a stakeholders meeting of the party held at the new APC Secretariat on Finbarrs Road, Umuahia, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, chairman of the party in the state, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, said the unconditional pardon followed moves by the party to strengthen its ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He explained that both Kalu and Nkwonta had reached out to the party privately and explained that their comments were not made in bad faith.

Abia APC debunks internal crisis

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Abia APC addressed allegations that the party was dealing with crisis ahead of the 2027 election.

Its reaction followed a claim by the state chapter of the Labour Party (LP) that supporters of Eric Opah and Henry Ikoh, a former minister of state for science and technology, were at loggerheads over outcome of the party’s primary election.
