David Mabuza, a former South African deputy president, has died at age 64

JOHANNESBURG – Former South Africa Deputy President David Mabuza has died aged 64, the public broadcaster the SABC confirmed on Thursday.

Mabuza, who served as deputy president from 2018 to 2023, died in a Johannesburg hospital.

He is credited with helping current President Cyril Ramaphosa win the tight 2017 contest to lead the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party and succeed the scandal-plagued Jacob Zuma.

Mabuza rose through the ranks of the ANC, serving as the fourth Premier of Mpumalanga from 2009 until 2018 before he moved to serve the party and then become South Africa’s Deputy President.

He resigned as a Member of Parliament in 2023 in a move that paved the way for President Ramaphosa to appoint incumbent Deputy President, Paul Mashatile.

In September 2015, Mabuza fell seriously ill and collapsed, prompting widespread speculation about the cause.

While early reports cited severe fatigue or a possible stroke. He later told the media that he had been poisoned. He took a two-month leave of absence from his role as Mpumalanga Premier, during which Vusi Shongwe served in an acting capacity.
