Netflix has officially dismissed its head of film, Dan Lin, after nearly three years leading the division. The executive departure comes in the midst of a sweeping corporate and creative restructuring across the streaming giant.
Lin’s dismissal follows a wave of approximately 1,000 layoffs at the streamer last week, which also saw the firing of chief content officer Bela Bajaria, as well as the exits of Lin’s right hand Doug Belgrad and indie film division head Sheroum Kim. Netflix has since brought in veteran film and television executive Peter Rice to replace Bajaria following engagement concerns and stock stagnation in the wake of the company’s defeated bid for Warner Bros. Lin was let go at the start of the weekend and is slated to address his teams on Monday, following recent appearances at Saturday’s Academy Gala and a Sunday screening for La Bola Negra on the Netflix campus.
A Netflix spokesperson offered no immediate comment on Lin’s exit, and while an official replacement has not been announced, former Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group leaders Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have been widely speculated to be discussing potential roles at the company. Lin originally transitioned to Netflix in 2024 to replace Scott Stuber after leading his production banner Rideback, known for the animated Lego franchise, It, and Sherlock Holmes. In a June interview with The New York Times, Lin revealed that he had greenlit or acquired 88 films during his tenure, citing standouts such as Apex, Emelia Perez, Here Comes the Flood and The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.
