Gwyneth Paltrow is set to headline her first television series in A24’s upcoming drama 'The Apology'
Netflix has issued a straight-to-series two-season commitment for the cold-case thriller
The production comes amid an executive restructuring at Netflix spearheaded across its scripted divisions
Netflix and A24 have officially greenlit a two-season order for The Apology, marking the first-ever lead television vehicle for Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow. The thriller drama series pairs the independent entertainment company with acclaimed Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg.
Paltrow stars as Evelyn Amspoker, a grief-stricken mother whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a high-profile cold case. Per the series logline, “When a stranger suddenly appears and confesses, justice finally seems possible,” until Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, discover that the perpetrator may receive a reduced sentence. “Faced with that unbearable truth, Evelyn and Caleb decide to take matters into their own hands.”
The drama is created, written, and showrun by Joe Murtagh (The Woman in the Wall), with Another Round director Thomas Vinterberg slated to direct. Joe Hipps of Cut To executive produces alongside Murtagh, Vinterberg, and Paltrow. While the actress’s film career spans Shakespeare in Love, The Talented Mr. Ripley, the Iron Man franchise, and Marty Supreme, her past television credits have been limited to guest arcs on Glee and a supporting role in The Politician.
The multi-season pickup arrives during an internal restructuring at Netflix under scripted TV head Jinny Howe, following company-wide layoffs and the high-profile exits of chief content officer Bela Bajaria and film head Dan Lin.
