Trump Bashes ‘Disloyal’ Supreme Court for Not Letting Him Defy Constitution

· Rolling Stone

President Donald Trump accused members of the Supreme Court of having been “swayed by foreign interests,” and of being “unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution,” in a press conference blasting the court’s rebuke of his tariff policies.

The court ruled 6-3 on Friday that the president had exceeded its tariff powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA,) a 1977 law that allows the president to regulate certain aspects of international trade during a declared national emergency. Chief Justice John Roberts, and fellow conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch, noted that the Constitution places the power to impose taxes in the hands of Congress. Trump doesn’t seem to care.

“I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed,” Trump told the press from the White House Briefing Room, where he called an emergency conference shortly after the decision was released. “I’d like to thank and congratulate [dissenting Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh] for their strength, wisdom, and love of our country, which is right now very proud of those justices. When you read the dissenting opinions, there’s no way that anyone can argue against them.”

“We have alternatives,” Trump declared, in a vow to continue his economic offensive against American trade partners and allies. “Therefore, effective immediately all national security tariffs […] remain in place, fully in place. and in full force and effect.”

Trump added that he would imminently sign an executive order implementing an additional 10 percent tariff on top of the existing penalties levied against other nations.

The press conference was just a surface-level glimpse of the president’s rage over the court’s decision. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the president told state governors — who were with him in the room for a breakfast meeting when an aide delivered the news — that the ruling a “disgrace.” Separate reporting from CNN indicated that Trump complained about “these fucking courts” while ranting to lawmakers about his frustrations.

Trump’s reaction was expected, given that he has been publicly demanding judicial backing for his tariff regime, and was practically daring the Supreme Court to defy him even in the hours leading up to the decision.

On Thursday, Trump said at an event in Georgia that he was confident the court would rule in his favor. “Without tariffs, what would you do? You know what? Everybody would be bankrupt, the whole country would be bankrupt,” he said. “Without tariffs, what would you do? You know what? Everybody would be bankrupt, the whole country would be bankrupt,” he said at an event in Georgia. “I’ve been waiting [for this decision] forever. The language is clear that I have the right to do it as president.”

To that effect, the president has repeatedly fear mongered over the possibility of full economic collapse should the court rule against him. “WE’RE SCREWED” Trump raved on Truth Social this week on the possibility of the court deciding against him. In August he warned of a second Great Depression (“1929 all over again”).

Despite the hysterics, the American economy is lagging under Trump’s tariff pressure cooker. The same day of the court’s ruling and Trump’s furious reaction, the Commerce Department released new figures indicating American GDP growth has slowed dramatically. The only economic crisis brewing for the nation is the one Trump insists on creating himself.
