OpenAI Launches GPT-Live Voice Feature with Real-Time Fluid Conversations
OpenAI has officially launched its latest voice model, GPT-Live, that allows ChatGPT to listen and speak simultaneously despite any pauses or interruptions for more fluid conversations. Available globally, all paying tiers will have GPT-Live-1 as the default while the free tier will get GPT-Live-1 mini.
Fluid Conversations Powered by Dual-Model Intelligence
Unlike before where you had to wait before giving voice commands, GPT-Live can hold fluid conversations. According to the video below, it knows when to speak and when to stop and even integrates verbal, active-listening cues like "mhmm" and "got it" using nine fully remastered system voices. For deeper computational tasks like agentic web search or complex scientific reasoning, GPT-Live delegates background workloads GPT-5.5, while keeping the conversation going without pause.
You may have to select between Instant mode for fast answers, or Medium and High reasoning effort settings when you want the AI to spend more time thinking. Audio-native guardrails designed to block voice impersonation, protect teen users via parental control links, and actively steer or end interactions if a higher-risk scenario is detected are also in place.
Developers may have to wait just a bit longer, as the developer API rollout is currently delayed, though a notification sign-up sheet is live. So, do you tend to speak more or type more when you prompt AI? Which would you choose, OpenAI GPT-Live or Gemini Live? Share your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave.com
