Apple could release the new AirPods with a camera, but they aren’t meant for recording

According to Bloomberg, Mark Gurman said Apple has begun testing AirPods with cameras. The camera on these earphones can't record photos or videos. Instead, it will only see when the wearer tells it to. For example, it can recognise what is being held or seen and count the calories of food in front of its eyes. So, what should you know about it?

This rumour has been brewing since last year

To recap, rumours of Apple developing AirPods with a camera have been circulating since late last year. Various speculations about how this camera would be used began to emerge, including claims that it could capture photos and video recordings like the Ray-Ban Meta.

Additionally, there is a feature that looks around so that it can provide warnings to the user. In the same report, cameras are placed on both the left and right AirPods, allowing the user to look around. Because of the presence of the camera, the stem of these AirPods is longer than the current AirPods Pro stem.

Moreover, the AirPods with camera are currently in the Design Validation Testing (DVT) phase before moving on to Production Validation Testing (PVT) for initial production to begin. According to initial reports, the AirPods were supposed to be launched in H1 2026 but were delayed because Siri with AI was also delayed by more than a year, forcing Apple to pay compensation.
