ChatGPT is introducing group chats for collaborative experiences
In 2025, many have become used to AI chatbot platforms like ChatGPT or Gemini for getting answers they want. You send a message or prompt to the bot, it responds, and this goes on till you're done. Now, OpenAI has added a group version of that.
Group chat
Yesterday, OpenAI released the latest GPT-5.1 version of ChatGPT. This version promises to be smarter and more user-friendly, with new tone settings and added personalisation controls. However, a new feature that's particularly interesting is the group chat system. It essentially lets you create or join a shared ChatGPT chat with up to 20 people.
It's not widely available yet, but group chat is available for ChatGPT users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan on mobile and web. Moreover, it's available even to free users. Of course, free users will be using a different version of ChatGPT, which may deliver different chat results.
Privacy controls built in
OpenAI also mentioned that group chats are separate from your private chats. That's good because it means users in your group chats can't access your 1-to-1 chat with the platform. In addition, ChatGPT will limit sensitive content if there are non-adults in the group chat. Parents or guardians can even disable the group chat via parental controls.
Although there's nothing particularly new, group chat expands the platform's usability by allowing more people to collaborate. How would you make use of this feature? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
