Bonnie Tyler Dead At 75

by · Genius

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer and songwriter whose raspy voice made her a superstar in the ‘70s and '80s, has died at the age of 75. Best remembered for hits like “It’s a Heartache” (1977), “Holding Out for a Hero” (1984), and her timeless 1983 smash “Total Eclipse Of the Heart”, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became an all-time karaoke favorite, Tyler had been an ill health since the spring, when she underwent emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal. After she was placed in a medically induced coma in May, “Total Eclipse” became a fixture in the Top 10 of the Genius Top Songs chart. It’s currently sitting at No. 1.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” read an official statement.

Tyler’s remarkable recording career began in the latter half of the ’70s, and over the decades, she released 18 albums, the most recent being 2021’s The Best Is Yet To Come. As tributes pour in from across the music world, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the leader was “saddened” by her passing. He called her “one of Britain’s greatest recording artists.”

“An iconic figure, she leaves behind a catalogue of music … which continues to touch lives, flood dance floors and fill karaoke booths,” said Starmer’s rep.
