Trump Pushes Russia Toward Peace Deal with Ukraine, Says Syria Should Handle Hezbollah
· novinite.comUS President Donald Trump called on Russia to reach a settlement with Ukraine, saying both sides have suffered heavy losses since the start of the war. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France, Trump said Moscow needed to move toward an agreement with Kyiv and noted that the conflict had already claimed a large number of lives on both sides.
“Russia must make a deal. Russia has lost a huge number of people, and so has Ukraine,” Trump said. He also revealed that he had held what he described as a productive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and expected to speak with him again later in the day.
The US president also addressed the recently announced framework agreement between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East. Trump rejected suggestions that the deal would involve American financial support for Iran, stressing that no US funds would be directed to the Islamic Republic.
“We are not investing any money in Iran,” he stated, dismissing speculation that future agreements could include US participation in economic development programs or investment initiatives inside the country.
His comments came after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a new phase of negotiations between Tehran and Washington is expected to begin on June 19, when both countries are scheduled to sign a memorandum of understanding in Switzerland. According to Araghchi, subsequent talks will focus on unresolved issues including Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions relief, and the mechanisms needed to implement any final agreement.
Trump also commented on the security situation in Lebanon and Israel’s long-running confrontation with Hezbollah. He disclosed that he had advised Israeli officials to allow Syria to take a greater role in dealing with the Iran-backed Shiite movement.
“I suggested to Israel that they let Syria deal with Hezbollah,” Trump said. He argued that Israel had been engaged in conflict with the group for too long and that the continuing violence was causing an unacceptable loss of life.
The remarks come at a time of continued tensions along the Israel-Lebanon front and amid reports pointing to a cooling relationship between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials emphasized that ending hostilities across the region remains one of the central goals of the emerging agreement with the United States. Araghchi said that securing a halt to fighting on all fronts, including the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, is among the key objectives of the understandings currently being negotiated between Washington and Tehran.
