South African lawyer and human rights advocate Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

Pillay previously served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and held senior positions as a judge and leader in international judicial institutions.

Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, Pillay became the first woman to establish her own law practice in Natal province in 1967. During apartheid, she defended activists persecuted by the authorities because of their political activities. In 1995, she became the first Black woman appointed to the Supreme Court of South Africa.

That same year, Pillay was elected a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, serving as its president from 1999 to 2003. Her work at the tribunal helped advance international jurisprudence recognizing that rape and sexual violence can constitute acts of genocide. In 2003, she joined the International Criminal Court in The Hague as a judge.

Pillay served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, working to protect fundamental rights and promote accountability for violations of international law. She also heads the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Her longstanding work has focused on advancing international justice and defending human rights, including efforts to investigate and prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in recognition of her efforts to defend democratic rights and support a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.

The Nobel Peace Prize is presented annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. It is one of five awards established in the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel in 1895. While the other Nobel Prizes are presented in Stockholm, the Peace Prize ceremony is held in Oslo.
