Volkswagen yesterday unveiled the ID. Polo, ushering one of its most recognisable hatchbacks into the electric era. Built on the brand’s updated MEB+ platform, the ID. Polo represents a significant shift as the long-running Polo nameplate transitions to the electric future. Pre-sales have already begun in select European markets, with introductory prices starting at under €25,000 (approximately Rs 27.7 lakh).

A familiar name, reimagined

With over 20 million units sold globally, the Polo has long been a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s lineup. The ID. Polo carries forward that mass-market appeal but adopts the brand’s new ‘Pure Positive’ design language. It features clean surfaces, balanced proportions and modern lighting elements, while subtle cues such as a C-pillar design inspired by the iconic Volkswagen Golf, adds a touch of heritage.

In terms of dimensions, the ID. Polo measures 4,053mm in length and rides on a 2,600mm wheelbase, translating to improved cabin space over its ICE predecessor. Practicality has also been enhanced, with a 441-litre boot that can expand to over 1,240 litres.

Interior design

Inside, the ID. Polo embraces a clean and tech-forward layout. A 13-inch freestanding infotainment touchscreen dominates the dashboard, complemented by a 10-inch digital driver’s display. Importantly, Volkswagen has retained physical controls for key functions, addressing usability concerns raised in earlier ID models.

Feature highlights include wireless smartphone connectivity, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, adaptive cruise control and a rear-view camera. Higher trims elevate the experience with features such as a Harman Kardon audio system, panoramic glass roof and 12-way powered seats with massage and memory functions.

The model also introduces advanced technologies like Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition, along with one-pedal driving and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability.

Battery options and performance

The ID. Polo will be offered with two battery configurations:

A 37kWh LFP battery, available in 116bhp and 135bhp outputs, delivering a claimed range of up to 329km. It supports DC fast charging up to 90kW, enabling a 10–80% charge in approximately 23 minutes.

A larger 52kWh NMC battery paired with a 211bhp motor, offering a WLTP-claimed range of up to 454km. This version supports 105kW DC fast charging, achieving a 10–80% charge in around 24 minutes.

Volkswagen has also confirmed a performance-focused GTI variant, expected to produce 226bhp.

Variants and positioning

Globally, the ID. Polo will be available in multiple trims, including Trend, Life and Style, each offering a progressive increase in features and technology. Volkswagen is also expected to expand the lineup further with additional powertrain options and equipment packages over time.

The ID. Polo marks a pivotal moment for Volkswagen as it continues its push toward electrification while retaining familiar nameplates. By blending practicality, accessible pricing and modern EV technology, the ID. Polo aims to replicate the success of its ICE counterpart in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
