Overspeeding, fatal crash, no CCTV: What we know on Atiq Ahmed son's death

Slain gangster Atiq Ahmed's youngest son, Aban Ahmed, was on his way to the Jhansi district jail to meet his jailed brother when his white Hyundai Creta crashed into a divider. Here's what we know of the fatal accident.

Three years after slain gangster Atiq Ahmed's third son was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi, his youngest son died in a road accident in the same Uttar Pradesh district on Thursday. Aban Ahmed was on his way to the Jhansi district jail to meet his jailed brother, Ali Ahmed, when his white Hyundai Creta crashed into a divider. While Aban and his friend Sonu died in the crash, three other occupants were injured.

It is not known who was driving the vehicle. A senior Jhansi police officer said initial findings suggested that overspeeding and possible loss of control might have caused the accident. The accident took place near the Poonch police station area of Jhansi. Cops told AajTak that the area received heavy rain over the past few days and the roads had become slippery.

HOW DID THE ACCIDENT HAPPEN?

The collision was so severe that it ripped apart the front end of the SUV. Overall, the vehicle was severely mangled.

The police officer said there were no CCTV cameras as the accident site was a rural area. Locals from nearby shops were the first to respond and shifted the injured to the hospital.

"When the accident took place, residents informed the police and helped shift the injured to the hospital," the officer said.

According to official records, the SUV was registered in the name of Mohammad Zaid. Zaid, Mohammad Umar, and Farukh were among the injured in the crash. Records show that the Creta was involved in multiple traffic violations and had several overspeeding challans registered against it.

The SUV has also been fined for violating parking rules and for being driven without a valid driving licence.

Umar, who is among the injured, said the SUV suddenly spun out of control and rammed into the divider. "The car lost balance and crashed. After that, I don't remember what happened. When I regained consciousness, I found myself lying on the road," Umar said.

TRAGIC DEATHS IN ATIQ AHMED'S FAMILY

The incident has brought into focus the tragic deaths in the family of the dreaded gangster-politician over the past three years.

Atiq Ahmed has five sons. The eldest, Umar Ahmed, has been lodged in Lucknow jail since 2022 in connection with an extortion and assault case.

His second son, Ali Ahmed, is in Jhansi jail in connection with an extortion case. He was shifted from Prayagraj earlier this year. Aban was on his way to meet him when the accident occurred.

Ali is also an accused in the high-profile Umesh Pal murder case. Advocate Umesh Pal and his two police bodyguards were murdered in February 2006 in Prayagraj. Pal was an eyewitness in the 2005 murder of then BSP MLA Raju Pal. Atiq Ahmed was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in March 2023 in the case.

The gangster, who had over 100 cases of murder and extortion against him, and his brother Ashraf were shot dead by two people who posed as journalists when they were being taken by police for a medical examination on April 16, 2023. They were being led by a chain attached to their handcuffs and surrounded by constables when the brazen attack happened.

Just three days before, Atiq's third son, Asad Ahmed, also wanted in the Umesh Pal case, was killed during an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police's special task force (STF). Police said Asad and his aide opened fire on the STF team, forcing it to retaliate.

Atiq's fourth son is Ahzam, who is believed to be residing with his sister, Shaheen Ahmed. During police action against Atiq after the murder of Umesh Pal, Ahzam and Aban, who were minors at that time, were sent to a child protection home.

In October 2023, the brothers were released, and their custody was granted to Shaheen.

Atiq's wife, Shaista Parveen, who is also wanted in the Umesh Pal case, is presently absconding.

Aban's death on Thursday marks yet another tragedy in a series of events over the past three years that have dramatically altered the fate of the slain gangster's family.
