Jailer 2 trailer review: Director Nelson gave away all surprises. What's left now?

The Jailer 2 trailer follows Rajinikanth's Tiger Muthuvel Pandian as he tracks the Kalpaks syndicate while Dileep searches for him. It confirms key returns and new faces, but keeps the larger timeline and purpose in play.

In Short

  • Jailer 2 trailer reveals major stars and alliances clearly
  • Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, linked to idol-smuggling case
  • Hrithik Roshan's cameo was shown as a silhouette, sparking fan speculation

The Jailer 2 trailer has arrived with everything a Rajinikanth fan could ask for — swagger, guns, explosions, punchlines and a formidable line-up of stars. But there is one question that refuses to go away: has director Nelson Dilipkumar revealed too much? From confirming the returning stars to showing the new faces and even dropping visual clues about Hrithik Roshan’s much-discussed cameo, the trailer appears to have taken much of the mystery out of the sequel.

Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, and the trailer establishes that he has been keeping a low profile after the events of Jailer. While Dileep (Suraj Venjaramoodu) tries to track him down, Muthuvel is seen working as a driver while investigating the larger syndicate connected to the idol-smuggling operation from the first film.

That immediately gives Jailer 2 a clear link to its predecessor. The first film ended with Muthuvel Pandian exposing and bringing down the idol-smuggling network. The sequel picks up from that world but appears to dig deeper into the people operating behind it.

Everyone is on a side now

One of the biggest surprises of Jailer was the way Nelson used his supporting stars. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff appeared almost like trump cards, with their introductions becoming major theatrical moments.

Jailer 2 does not seem interested in hiding those cards for long.

The trailer officially confirms the return of Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar, while also revealing Mithun Chakraborty and the new additions to the franchise. SJ Suryah and Vidya Balan are clearly positioned on the opposing side, while the returning star cameos are shown as part of Muthuvel's larger network. In other words, the trailer has effectively told us who is with Tiger and who is against him.

That may make the film's central conflict easier to understand, but it also takes away one of the most enjoyable parts of a Nelson film — discovering what the filmmaker has been hiding.

And then there is Hrithik

The Hrithik Roshan cameo was arguably one of the biggest secrets surrounding Jailer 2. The trailer, however, appears to have played a clever middle ground.

Hrithik's face is not shown clearly. Talk about the Alpha trailer deja vu! Instead, there is a silhouette that has sent fans into detective mode. But it did not take long for viewers to connect the dots, with social media users identifying the figure as Hrithik based on the silhouette and the context around the cameo.

So even when Nelson tries to hide the actor, the internet has already done what the trailer perhaps wanted audiences to do — figure it out.

The question now is not whether Hrithik is in the film, but what he is doing there. And that could still be one of the film's genuine surprises.

The timeline could be the real game

This is where Jailer 2 gets more interesting.

On the surface, this is a straightforward sequel. The story follows the events of Jailer, with Muthuvel Pandian once again being pulled into a dangerous criminal network. But the trailer also appears to hint at a larger timeline involving Muthuvel's past.

That opens the possibility of the sequel moving between the present-day story and portions that explore the world that existed before the events of Jailer. Rather than functioning as a conventional continuation, Jailer 2 could use those portions to fill in the gaps around Tiger's past and connect them to the events of the first film.

This is important because the first Jailer deliberately gave us only fragments of Muthuvel Pandian's history. We knew he had a fearsome reputation and a violent past, but the film largely kept that history in the background. The sequel now appears to be bringing some of that history forward.

If Nelson uses the past to explain how Muthuvel became Tiger, Jailer 2 could effectively work on two timelines — one continuing the story after Jailer and another taking audiences back to the events that shaped the character.

That could also explain why the film has such a large ensemble. The new characters need not all exist in the same period or serve the same purpose in Muthuvel's present-day mission.

Trailer gives away the faces. But not necessarily the game

This is perhaps where the trailer is both its strength and its weakness. We now know who many of the major players are. We know which side several characters appear to be on. We know Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff are back. We know Mithun Chakraborty is part of the film. We have seen Vidya Balan and SJ Suryah in action. And Hrithik's supposedly secret cameo has already become an open secret.

Vijay Sethupathi is another surprise that has already been taken off the table, even though he does not appear in the trailer. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Sethupathi confirmed that he has done a cameo in Jailer 2, saying he took it up because of his admiration for Rajinikanth. “I have done a cameo in Jailer 2 because I love Rajinikanth sir. To be with him, I get to learn a lot. The superstars survived in this industry for so many decades. There is so much to learn,” he said.

But knowing who is in the film is not the same as knowing what Nelson is going to do with them. That distinction could save Jailer 2.

Nelson's Jailer worked because it understood the pleasure of the reveal. Muthuvel Pandian's past, the smuggling syndicate and the sudden arrival of larger-than-life allies all contributed to the film's theatrical appeal. With Jailer 2, the filmmaker appears to have moved some of those surprises into the trailer itself.

So the real suspense now lies elsewhere: how these characters come together, what Muthuvel is actually investigating and how his past feeds into the present-day conflict.

Rajinikanth remains the centre of it all

For all the talk about cameos and surprise appearances, the trailer makes one thing very clear: this is still Rajinikanth's Jailer. Tiger gets the biggest mass moments, the swagger and the action set-pieces. The supporting cast may be enormous, but the film continues to revolve around Muthuvel Pandian. And perhaps that is exactly what Nelson wants.

The trailer may have revealed the faces, the alliances and even some of the cameos. But if the filmmaker has genuinely kept the story behind those alliances under wraps, Jailer 2 may still have enough ammunition left for the theatre.

The surprises may no longer be surprises. The real question is whether Nelson has managed to hide the actual game.

Jailer 2 releases worldwide on October 15.
