Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg is set to return to science fiction with Disclosure Day, which releases in theatres worldwide on June 12. The highly anticipated film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson, among others and promises a story that blends mystery, discovery and profound questions about humanity’s future.
While much of the plot remains under wraps, Spielberg has made it clear that Disclosure Day is more than a conventional alien-contact thriller. According to the filmmaker, the project uses science fiction as a lens to examine misinformation, power and the increasingly complicated search for truth.
In a statement shared with India Today exclusively, Spielberg said the story reflects contemporary concerns about how information is shaped and controlled in modern society.
“Disclosure Day is a movie about misinformation and the challenge of finding truth in a culture when powerful people have tools to blur the lines of fact and fiction, of what is real and unreal, in service of protecting and advancing their agendas,” Spielberg said.
The filmmaker’s comments arrive at a time when debates around misinformation, public trust and competing narratives continue to dominate global conversations. Against that backdrop, Disclosure Day appears to explore not only the discovery of a potentially world-altering truth, but also how people respond when long-held assumptions are challenged.
Spielberg said the film asks audiences to consider what happens when humanity encounters information that fundamentally reshapes its understanding of the universe.
He said, “It’s a movie that also asks questions about what we do with truth that expands our understanding of the universe in a way that challenges the beliefs that give us meaning, including religion. The X-Files taught us that the truth is out there, but what happens when we find it? Can we accept it? Do we reject it? Will it bring us together or divide us further?”
The filmmaker suggested that the real focus of Disclosure Day is not the discovery itself, but the human reaction to it. The story examines whether transformative truths can unite people or whether they risk deepening existing divisions. At its heart, however, Spielberg believes the film carries a more hopeful message.
“Ultimately, though, I think Disclosure Day is a story about empathy as an extraordinary resource, and how it needs to be shared globally, with the entire world, not hoarded for self-interest or reserved for those closest to us,” he said.
Disclosure Day is set to hit theatres across India on June 12, 2026. The film will be screened in English and released in both 2D and Dolby Cinema 2D formats.
