  • Manchester City win 8th FA Cup title after 1-0 victory over Chelsea
  • Chelsea continues to struggle, losing seven consecutive domestic cup finals
  • Man City two point behind Arsenal in Premier League title race

Manchester City lifted the FA Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the final on Saturday, courtesy of a 72nd-minute winner from Antoine Semenyo. The win completed a domestic cup double for Pep Guardiola’s side as they continue their push in the Premier League title race.

The final remained tightly contested for long stretches before Semenyo produced the decisive moment, turning and back-heeling a cross from Erling Haaland past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Snchez. The goal shifted the tempo of the match, opening up a tense final 20 minutes where both sides created chances.

City nearly doubled their advantage when Rayan Cherki forced a sharp save from Snchez, while Matheus Nunes struck the post as Chelsea pushed for an equaliser.

City captain Bernardo Silva described the win as a fitting way to potentially close out a special chapter in his career, while also acknowledging the team’s ongoing league ambitions. “It’s very special it’s really nice to finish this way and maybe we can still have a small dream that we can still fight for the Premier League,” Silva said.

He also reflected on the intensity of the contest after Chelsea applied sustained pressure after half-time. “In the beginning of the second half it was really tough for us and they put us under a lot of pressure and made it very difficult,” he added.

A DOMESTIC TREBLE ON HORIZON?

The victory marks Manchester City’s eighth FA Cup triumph and adds to their League Cup success earlier in the season, further underlining their continued dominance in English domestic football under Guardiola. However, Chelsea’s struggles in finals continue, extending a run of seven consecutive domestic cup final defeats.

City, meanwhile, remain firmly in contention in the Premier League title race, sitting just two points behind leaders Arsenal with two matches remaining. Their final league fixtures include a challenging trip against European-qualification chasing AFC Bournemouth, followed by an in-form Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on the final day of the season.

With momentum from their FA Cup triumph, Guardiola’s side will now look to carry their winning form into the decisive closing stretch of the campaign as they chase yet another potential league title.

For Chelsea, the loss caps a turbulent season marked by managerial instability and inconsistent league form. Despite opportunities from players such as Enzo Fernndez, Joo Pedro, and Liam Delap, they were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined City defence.

The defeat also raises further questions about Chelsea’s direction under their current structure, as the club’s American ownership group continues its search for long-term managerial stability following multiple changes in recent months.
