Renault India has launched the new Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 at Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and the top-end variant costs Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The SUV combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery, delivering a maximum system output of 160PS. Renault claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29kmpl, electric driving for up to 80 per cent of city journeys and a combined driving range of up to 1,400km.

The Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is available in three variants: Evolution, Techno and Emotion. It will compete against the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder in the midsize SUV segment.

Renault Duster hybrid: Powertrain and performance

The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is powered by a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The petrol engine produces 110bhp, while the traction motor delivers 50bhp and 208Nm of torque. The combined hybrid system develops a maximum output of 160bhp.

The petrol engine uses a 350-bar direct fuel injection system and Atkinson-cycle combustion technology, designed to improve efficiency. The hybrid setup automatically switches between electric, hybrid and petrol-powered operation depending on driving conditions and power requirements.

Renault claims the Duster hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 9.6 seconds. The system is designed to deliver electric-first driving in everyday conditions while retaining the convenience of a conventional petrol-powered SUV.

Formula 1-inspired multi-mode transmission

A key feature of the Duster hybrid is its Formula 1-inspired multi-mode automatic gearbox. The transmission combines two electric gears and four petrol-engine gears, offering 15 possible drive combinations to optimise power delivery and efficiency.

The system coordinates the petrol engine and electric motors according to driving conditions, aiming to provide smooth gear changes, responsive acceleration and efficient operation across different speeds.

The SUV also gets a B Mode in the gear selector, which increases regenerative braking when the driver lifts off the accelerator. This helps recover more energy during deceleration and downhill driving, storing it in the battery while reducing the need for frequent brake application.

An E-Save mode is also available to preserve battery energy for later use. The battery recharges automatically through the petrol engine and regenerative braking, eliminating the need for an external charging connection.

Renault Duster hybrid: Mileage and driving range

Renault claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29kmpl for the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160, which the company positions as a best-in-segment figure. It can operate in pure electric mode for up to 80 per cent of city driving, depending on driving conditions, and is claimed to offer fuel savings of up to 29 per cent compared with diesel.

The company also claims a combined driving range of up to 1,400km on a full tank of fuel. The hybrid system is designed to maximise electric driving in suitable conditions, particularly in stop-and-go city traffic, while using the petrol engine when required.

Since the battery is charged automatically while driving and during deceleration, owners do not need access to a charging station. Actual fuel economy and driving range will vary depending on traffic, driving style, road conditions and other operating factors.

Renault Duster hybrid: Battery and cooling technology

The strong-hybrid system uses a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery operating at a nominal voltage of 247V. One of its key features is direct refrigerant cooling, which helps regulate battery temperature across varying operating conditions and supports consistent performance.

The battery is designed to support extended electric driving in urban conditions and is covered by a warranty of eight years or 1,60,000km, whichever comes first, according to Renault's specifications.

The hybrid system also incorporates a starter-generator that synchronises transmission operation, supports gear changes and functions as a generator to charge the battery. Together, these components manage energy flow between the petrol engine, electric motors and battery.

Renault Duster hybrid: Suspension, dimensions and practicality

The Duster features an MTV-CL suspension setup with Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) technology. The suspension system is designed to adjust damping characteristics according to road inputs, balancing ride comfort over uneven surfaces with stability and control.

The SUV retains its rugged design and off-road-oriented proportions, with a ground clearance of 212mm, an approach angle of 26.9 degrees and a departure angle of 34.7 degrees.

Boot capacity stands at 372 litres under the parcel shelf and 544 litres when measured up to the roof. The cabin also offers 32.6 litres of interior storage space.

The Duster hybrid features an illuminated DUSTER logo integrated into the front grille, full LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, LED taillamps and a horizontal LED rear light bar. It is available with 18-inch Outback diamond-cut alloy wheels or 18-inch Ridge flex wheels, depending on the variant.

Renault Duster hybrid: Interior and features

The new hybrid version receives updated interior upholstery and seat designs. The Emotion variant gets dune brown leatherette upholstery, ventilated front seats and six-way electrically adjustable front seats. The Techno variant features desert beige semi-leatherette upholstery. Renault has also revised the headrest design to improve the perceived roominess of the cabin.

The dashboard features carbon-finish detailing with the dune brown upholstery option, while the desert beige treatment gets a brown finish on the upper dashboard. An elevated centre console with an electronic gear selector and physical buttons for frequently used functions are also part of the cabin layout.

Renault Duster: Existing turbo-petrol engine options

The addition of the strong-hybrid powertrain expands the Duster's engine lineup, which also includes two turbo-petrol options.

The entry-level engine is a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit producing 100bhp and 160Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Buyers seeking more performance can opt for the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, which develops 163bhp and 280Nm of torque. This engine is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT).

With the addition of the 1.8-litre strong-hybrid setup, the Duster offers buyers a choice between conventional turbo-petrol performance and a hybrid powertrain focused on fuel efficiency. Its claimed mileage and electric-driving capability are intended to appeal particularly to customers considering an alternative to diesel SUVs.
