LSG vs PBKS, Preview: Punjab Kings head into a must-win clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, hoping to stop a six-match losing streak that has pushed their playoff hopes to the brink. While PBKS still have an outside chance of qualifying, LSG, already out of contention, will look to end their season on a high note at home.

In Short

  • Punjab Kings need to beat LSG to keep their fading playoff hopes alive
  • PBKS also require a favour from Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals
  • A Rajasthan Royals win over Mumbai would officially end Punjab's hopes

Punjab Kings walk into their final league match against Lucknow Super Giants knowing the margin for error has disappeared completely. A few weeks ago, they looked set for a comfortable playoff finish and were being spoken about as one of the strongest sides in IPL 2026. Now, after six straight defeats, Shreyas Iyer's team are left needing a win on Saturday and favourable results elsewhere just to stay alive in the tournament.

The dramatic shift in their season has been difficult to ignore. Punjab looked unstoppable during the first half of the campaign, playing an aggressive brand of cricket that overwhelmed opponents. Their stunning 265-run chase against Delhi Capitals on April 25 captured everything that made them dangerous — fearless batting, calm finishing under pressure, and the confidence to keep attacking regardless of the situation. With six wins in their first seven matches, PBKS had quickly established themselves as serious contenders.

Since then, however, the campaign has slipped away alarmingly fast. The defeats have not only hurt Punjab on the points table, but they have also exposed cracks that were hidden during the winning run. The batting line-up that once dominated powerplays has struggled to maintain the same tempo, while the bowling attack has repeatedly failed to close out key moments in games. The pressure has only grown heavier with every loss, leaving Punjab in a position where even victory in their final match may not guarantee qualification.

PBKS SEARCH FOR LOST MOMENTUM

Punjab's biggest strength earlier in the season was the fearless intent shown by their top order. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh regularly gave the side explosive starts, allowing the middle order to attack from the outset rather than rebuild innings. That momentum has faded badly over the last few matches.

Priyansh has managed only one half-century in his last seven innings and was dismissed for a duck in the previous game, while Prabhsimran too has struggled to produce the consistency he showed during Punjab's strong start to the season. Whenever Punjab lose early wickets now, the innings slows down quickly and the pressure becomes visible.

The dip in Shreyas Iyer's form has added to those concerns. The Punjab captain looked in complete control during the team's winning run, but recent matches have seen him struggle to influence games in the same way. He has crossed fifty only once during the losing streak, and without his presence holding the innings together, Punjab's middle order has looked vulnerable.

The problems have extended beyond batting. Arshdeep Singh and Lockie Ferguson have not been able to deliver consistently with the ball, particularly during the death overs, while Yuzvendra Chahal's season has swung between match-winning spells and expensive outings. Punjab's fielding has hurt them as well, with dropped catches proving costly in pressure situations. The decision to leave out Marco Jansen in the previous match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru reflected a side still searching for the right combination late in the season.

There have still been a few positives. Azmatullah Omarzai has continued to impress with his all-round contributions, while Shashank Singh's fighting fifty against RCB at least offered some resistance from the middle order. Punjab know they still possess enough batting firepower to change a game quickly if their key players can rediscover rhythm at the right time.

LSG LOOK TO PLAY SPOILERS

Lucknow Super Giants may already be out of playoff contention, but their recent performances suggest they are more than capable of making life difficult for Punjab. At the Ekana Stadium, LSG have shown far greater control and confidence, securing wins over Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings in recent matches.

Their batting line-up, especially at the top, has looked dangerous. Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis were outstanding against Rajasthan Royals in the previous game, adding 109 runs in just 8.2 overs and putting LSG in a commanding position early in the chase. Nicholas Pooran too has looked better in recent outings after a quiet phase in the middle of the season.

There will also be attention on Rishabh Pant, whose season has never really taken off either as batter or captain. With only one fifty in the tournament so far, Pant will be eager to finish on a positive note in front of the home crowd. LSG's bowling attack has lacked consistency through the season, although Prince Yadav has emerged as one of the brighter performers, while Mohammed Shami's availability remains uncertain after he missed the previous match.

HOW CAN PBKS REACH THE PLAYOFFS?

Punjab Kings face a must-win situation against Lucknow Super Giants in their final league match on Saturday, but even victory may not be enough to secure a playoff spot. Currently fifth on the table, the Shreyas Iyer-led side are dependent on other results as well.

Punjab need Mumbai Indians to beat Rajasthan Royals in Sunday’s clash, while Kolkata Knight Riders must not move ahead of them on points or net run rate after their game against Delhi Capitals. A Rajasthan victory would keep Punjab alive in the race, while a KKR win could bring net run rate into play. PBKS currently hold a slight edge over KKR in that department.

LSG vs PBKS: HEAD-TO-HEAD

Punjab Kings hold a slight edge over Lucknow Super Giants in the rivalry with a 4-3 head-to-head record, including a 2-1 advantage at the Ekana Stadium. PBKS have also dominated the recent meetings between the two sides, winning all three encounters since IPL 2025. Earlier this season in Mullanpur, Punjab produced one of the batting performances of the tournament, piling up 254 against LSG in a commanding win.

LUCKNOW WEATHER AND PITCH CONDITIONS

Lucknow is set for another scorching evening with temperatures expected to remain well above 40 degrees during the day before easing slightly closer to match time.

While the Ekana Stadium was initially regarded as one of the more bowler-friendly venues this season, the trend has shifted in recent matches. High-scoring games against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings showed that batting has become considerably easier once set, with LSG winning both contests at home.

There should still be some movement for the pacers early in the innings, especially under the lights, but batters who survive the initial phase are likely to enjoy better conditions as the match progresses. Chasing has also remained a significant advantage at this venue, with teams batting second winning nine of the 13 matches here since IPL 2025, excluding the Super Over game involving KKR.

LSG vs PBKS: TEAM NEWS

Lucknow Super Giants are unlikely to have Aiden Markram available for their final league match after the South African opener returned home due to personal reasons and missed the previous game as well. Mohammed Shami was also absent in the last match, although there has been no injury update from the franchise regarding the veteran pacer.

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, have no injury or availability concerns ahead of the must-win clash.
