Actor Dhanush unveiled the first look of Thamizh Murugan on Friday, revealing a striking image from his fifth film with director Vetri Maaran. The poster shows Dhanush riding an elephant, standing before a large army, and wielding a vel, the sacred spear associated with Lord Murugan.

The announcement has also drawn attention for its cultural context. The film’s title and imagery tie it closely to Tamil identity, with Lord Murugan holding a distinct place in Tamil Nadu, where he is revered as Thamizh Kadavul, or the god of the Tamil people. The first-look video and poster have also sparked online discussion around another upcoming film based on a Lord Murugan storyline.

Thamizh Murugan marks the latest collaboration between Dhanush and Vetri Maaran. It is their fifth film together after Polladhavan, Aadukalam, Vada Chennai and Asuran. The pair had also announced a sequel titled Vada Chennai II: Anbuvin Ezhuchi, but production on that film is yet to begin.

The poster uses strong divine imagery. Dhanush is seated atop an elephant and placed before a massive army. He is shown holding a vel, the traditional spear linked to Lord Murugan, who is also known as Kartikeya in North India.

Behind the scenes, the story has been written by Arivumathi, while Sai Abhyankkar will compose the music. The film is rooted in the cultural and regional identity associated with Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu.

The film’s announcement comes at a time when Telugu star Junior NTR and director Trivikram Srinivas are also working on a project centred on a Lord Murugan storyline. That film recently drew criticism after its producer publicly said that Lord Murugan was born in the North. The remark was criticised by many Tamil people, who saw it as a disregard for their cultural heritage.

Thamizh Murugan is now being called a cultural response to that controversy. Many fans said the film directly answers the Junior NTR-Trivikram project and reclaims the deity’s regional roots.
