Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has hailed the SA20 league as the “best competition after IPL", citing the league’s competitiveness as a major reason for his decision to join it. Karthik, who retired from international cricket and the IPL after Royal Challengers Bangalore’s campaign ended in the eliminator of IPL 2024, made his SA20 debut for Paarl Royals on Saturday. In the process, he became the first Indian player to feature in the league.

Karthik replaced England’s Jos Buttler in the Royals squad and debuted against SunRisers Eastern Cape in the third match of the 2025 season. Speaking on the microphone while fielding at Boland Park in Paarl, Karthik, who is also an SA20 ambassador, explained his motivation to join the league.

“A couple of reasons I joined this league,” Karthik said. “I genuinely believe this is the best competition after the IPL. I wanted to play some real competitive cricket, and I don’t think there is a better tournament than this. Also, I’ve always wanted to be part of the Royals setup. Many of my friends have played for the Royals, so when the opportunity came, I was happy to accept it.”

Dinesh Karthik on participating in SA20

Karthik, who transitioned to commentary a couple of years ago and even covered the SA20 last year, said he was amazed by the talent in South Africa. “A lot of good talent out here,” he said. “The first couple of days, when I came out here, I was pretty amazed to see how much talent is in this league. It’s a good squad, a good tournament, and I’m really looking forward to gelling with the boys.”

In his debut match, Karthik made his presence felt on the field by participating in the run-out of Tom Abell, breaking the stumps off a sharp throw from Lungi Ngidi. Eastern Cape, who opted to bat first, posted a competitive total of 193, led by captain Aiden Markram’s 49-ball 82.

Karthik’s move to the SA20 reflects his desire to stay connected to cricket after his playing career. Alongside his stint with Paarl Royals, Karthik will also take on a new role as the batting coach and mentor of RCB for the upcoming IPL season.

Karthik’s debut in the SA20 marks a significant moment, showcasing the league’s growing appeal and the veteran player’s ongoing contribution to the game.
