Karnataka woman who begged for a living dies, over Rs 30 lakh found at her home

A Karnataka-based woman who used to beg for a living passed away, and locals found bags of cash inside her rented Mandya home. The cash has been kept with the Guthalu mosque until relatives arrive and counting is completed.

A woman who had spent years begging for a living in Karnataka’s Mandya left locals stunned after more than Rs 30 lakh in cash was found inside her rented home following her death.

The woman, identified as Hoor Unnisa, lived alone in a rented house in the Guthalu locality. She and her sister were unmarried, and Hoorahad been living by herself since her sister died around two years ago.

Hoor died on Sunday due to age-related ailments. It was after her death that locals who went to inspect the house reportedly discovered several bags filled with cash.

According to initial estimates by community leaders, there were more than 30 bags containing money inside the house. Around Rs 8-9 lakh was counted on Sunday, while the cash kept in roughly 20 other bags was still awaiting counting.

The discovery left locals surprised, particularly because Hoor was known to have earned her livelihood through begging. The full amount of money found in the house had not yet been officially established when the initial estimate was made.

The cash was subsequently handed over to the mosque in Guthalu for safekeeping. Muslim community leaders also informed Hoor’s relatives about the discovery and said the remaining bags would be opened and counted once they arrived.

A decision on who would be entitled to the money will be taken after her relatives arrive and the entire amount is ascertained. Until then, the cash remains in the custody of the mosque.

The unusual discovery has left locals wondering how the elderly woman accumulated and preserved such a large amount of cash while living alone and relying on begging for her livelihood.
