Shubman Gill etched his name in the record books by registering the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket. He achieved the milestone on Day 2 of the second Test against Ben Stokes’ England at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The 25-year-old from Fazilka surpassed Virat Kohli’s 254*, which came against South Africa in 2019 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
With this knock, Gill also became only the sixth Indian captain to score a double century in Test cricket—joining the elite list of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Amongst them, Kohli—who retired from Tests in May—leads the chart with seven double centuries.
