A woman reportedly fell from a crowded Mumbai local train while it was halted at a signal between Mumbra and Diva during the morning rush on Thursday, highlighting once again the serious safety risks posed by extreme overcrowding on suburban trains.

The incident involved the 7:56 am Dombivli local, and a video showing the packed train and passengers hanging near the doorway has surfaced.

According to reports, the Dombivli-bound local was travelling from Diva towards Mumbra when it was halted briefly at a signal. The train was already heavily crowded at the time.

As it remained stationary on a curve, the pressure from passengers packed near the doorway reportedly caused a woman to lose her balance and she fell from the moving stock.

The video shows the extent of the overcrowding, with several passengers standing tightly packed at the entrance and some holding on to the exterior of the coach.

The footage captures the train positioned along a curved stretch of track, while passengers appear to be struggling for space around the doorway, underscoring the hazardous conditions during the morning peak period.

Reports further suggest that the crowding had become so severe that some women chose to get down from the train before the incident and walk along the railway tracks towards Mumbra station.

Following the incident, the Thane Railway Police were approached for information. Senior Police Inspector Dharmendra Vishnu Aware said the train had been halted between Mumbra and Diva because of a signal and that police had received information about a woman falling from the train amid the heavy crowd.

However, no formal complaint or report had been registered at the Thane Railway Police station at the time of the statement.

Police said a search for the woman was underway and that further details would be shared after her whereabouts and condition were confirmed.

The incident has once again drawn attention to passenger safety and crowd management on Mumbai's suburban railway network.
