Grey's Anatomy is officially growing bigger. More than two decades after the hit medical drama first premiered, ABC has greenlit a brand-new spinoff set in rural Texas, shifting the franchise away from its familiar big-city hospital backdrop to focus on healthcare challenges in remote communities, as reported by Variety.

The currently untitled drama has been created by Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis. Both will serve as executive producers, with Marinis continuing her association with the franchise after becoming showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy in 2024.

WHAT THE NEW GREY'S SPINOFF WILL EXPLORE

As per the official description quoted by Variety, the series revolves around “an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center — the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”

Unlike previous stories in the franchise that largely unfolded inside fast-moving urban hospitals, the new show aims to spotlight life inside a rural medical facility where resources, accessibility and emergency care can often become major challenges.

The shift in setting is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Grey’s Anatomy world while continuing the emotional storytelling and character-driven drama the franchise is known for.

ELLEN POMPEO JOINS THE PROJECT

Ellen Pompeo, best known for playing Meredith Grey, has also boarded the project as an executive producer.

The series additionally brings back longtime Shondaland collaborator Betsy Beers as executive producer. The project is being developed under Shondaland in partnership with 20th Television.

GREY'S ANATOMY FRANCHISE

Since debuting in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy has become one of television’s most successful and longest-running dramas. The franchise has previously expanded with popular spinoffs like Private Practice and Station 19.

While the makers have not yet revealed the cast or premiere date of the new series, Variety reported that the project is moving quickly through development as ABC builds its future programming lineup.

It also remains unclear whether any familiar characters from the original Grey’s Anatomy universe will appear in the upcoming Texas-set drama.
