Argentina captain Lionel Messi will start on the bench for Saturday's FIFA World Cup Group J clash against Jordan, with coach Lionel Scaloni opting to rest his star forward after the defending champions sealed qualification for the knockout rounds.

Messi has been in sensational form, scoring all five of Argentina's goals in victories over Algeria and Austria to help his side secure top spot in Group J with a game to spare.

Speaking ahead of the match, Scaloni confirmed that the Inter Miami star would not be in the starting XI but is expected to feature later in the game.

"Leo will start on the bench," Scaloni said.

"Leo will come in a little bit later," he added.

SQUAD ROTATION

Scaloni dismissed suggestions that Argentina would field a weakened side, insisting every player in the squad has earned the opportunity to represent the reigning world champions.

"Those that are playing tomorrow deserve to play, they are part of the team," Scaloni said.

"All the effort we've put in in training is because of them. They are making every effort when they're not playing."

The Argentina coach added that his aim is to ensure the team maintains the same level regardless of personnel.

"The dream as a coach is to have the team perform the same way, independent of the players who comprise the team."

"If you are wearing the jersey and playing, it doesn't matter if the game has significance for the points or not. You're going to do your best to win."

JORDAN TEST

Although Jordan have already been eliminated after consecutive defeats in their maiden World Cup campaign, Scaloni expects a disciplined challenge from the Asian side.

He said Jordan are likely to line up with five defenders and warned that Argentina may have to tweak their tactics if they struggle to break them down.

"Jordan normally play with five defenders and we're open to the possibility that, if we're facing some difficulties, we might have to move slightly differently," Scaloni said.

Argentina will be aiming to complete a perfect group-stage campaign before turning their attention to the Round of 32, while Jordan will be hoping to end their historic first World Cup appearance on a positive note.
