- New Siri will run on Google’s Gemini AI models
- It is expected to come with more AI features, new Search to Ask option
Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 kicks off later today. As is the case with WWDC, we can expect some big announcements from the tech giant, focused on software. Though the 2026 iteration of the event is expected to double down on one feature in particular, a revamped Siri.
Apple first announced Apple Intelligence in 2024, as the company planned to compete against the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. However, almost two years since, the Cupertino giant has failed to catch up against the competition, with Siri still transferring complex queries to ChatGPT.
Now, that is likely about to change. Earlier this year, Apple signed a deal with Google that allows the company to use Gemini AI models to power Siri. And you can expect this new version of Siri to be showcased at WWDC this year.
Revamped Siri may do a lot more tasks for you
As per a report from Bloomberg, the new version of Siri is known internally as Campo, and sits at the centre of the company’s new AI strategy. The Cupertino giant is reportedly working on turning Siri into a broader AI companion than just a voice assistant, which can handle tasks across the iPhone, iPad and Mac throughout the day, with deeper control over Apple’s own apps as well as third-party apps.
Siri is now expected to use personal data across a user’s device and Apple account, respond to what is on the screen, and move deeper inside apps through voice commands. That is, the Apple virtual assistant will likely be able to do a lot more personalised tasks for you. This could potentially bring Siri on par with AI chatbots that have risen in popularity.
The revamped Siri may also handle more complex requests such as drafting an email from topics and context, using information from the web, emails, calendars, notes and contacts. For the first time, Siri is expected to help users check whether they are free before creating appointments and better identify overlapping events.
Revamped Siri could come with a new design
With Apple Intelligence, Siri got a new design where you would get a glowing border across the whole screen. But the revamped Siri may be in for another design change. The report indicates that the new Siri is expected to open inside the Dynamic Island with a new dark-toned animation when users say "Siri" or hold the power button.
In addition, Apple is expected to introduce a new "Search or Ask" interface that can be opened with a swipe down from the top centre of the screen, while Notification Centre shifts to a swipe from the top left.
The "Search or Ask" page is also expected to include Siri Suggestions, frequently used apps, recent searches and contextual updates such as weather. Siri’s results may appear as rich cards for people, places, news, weather, sports and a user’s own data, including messages, notes, contacts, reminders and calendar items.
The revamped Siri may also bring new visual intelligence features in the camera app. This may include support for recognising nutrition labels and contact information, or building on its current ability to identify objects, extract details such as calendar data, and send images to Google or ChatGPT.
Apple is expected to add AI tools for photos too, such as Extend for generating image content beyond the original frame, or Reframe for adjusting the perspective of spatial photos. The existing Clean Up tool, which has faced complaints about glitches and poor object removal, is also expected to be improved.
Siri to become a chatbot?
Another big change that Apple may be planning is to turn Siri into a more conversational chatbot, in a shift away from the company’s previous strategy. Users may be able to switch between outside chatbots from within Siri, with Apple said to have tested ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Siri may also support multiple commands in a single prompt, such as checking the weather, setting a calendar event and sending a message at once.
One of the bigger updates expected this year is a standalone Siri app across iOS, iPadOS and macOS. The app is said to include a main page of past chats in light or dark mode, conversation summaries, iCloud syncing across devices, and a chat layout similar to Messages with a text field and voice input button.
Users may also be able to insert photos from the camera or library and attach files for analysis. Apple is reportedly adding auto-delete options for chat history, letting users keep conversations for 30 days, one year or forever.
What else can you expect at WWDC 2026?
Beyond Siri, Apple is expected to push AI more widely across its software. Developers may get a new CoreAI system to integrate AI into their apps more easily, while makers of AI agents may be able to connect to Siri and Apple’s own AI tools.
Across the operating systems, Apple is expected to continue refining the Liquid Glass design introduced last year while focusing on bug fixes, security and speed. Under-the-hood changes in iOS 27 are also expected to support the interface of a foldable iPhone that may arrive later this year. And macOS 27 may get a small redesign to address shadow and transparency issues seen in macOS 26 Tahoe. You can also expect some improvements in other OS releases – iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27.
When will Apple launch revamped Siri?
While Apple is expected to showcase new features for Siri and its various operating systems, it is likely that the company may only roll them out later this year. iOS 27 for instance, may only be released with the launch of the iPhone 18 series that is tipped to happen in September this year. And this may be when you finally get your hands on the new Siri.
Keep in mind that, as per reports, the revamped Siri may come with a beta tag at least at the time of its release.
