A freer Zverev, an unstoppable Sinner. Wimbledon final promises blockbuster
Wimbledon 2026: Fresh off his maiden Grand Slam triumph at Roland Garros, Alexander Zverev faces his toughest test yet as world No.1 Jannik Sinner stands between him and a second straight major title.

- Alexander Zverev is looking to win back-to-back Grand Slam titles
- Jannik Sinner has beaten Zverev in their last 9 meetings
- Sinner took down Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the semis
Alexander Zverev finally buried his Grand Slam demons at Roland Garros last month, but an even sterner examination awaits him at Wimbledon. Standing between the German and a second straight major title is world No.1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner, who has turned their rivalry into one of the most one-sided contests on the ATP Tour.
Zverev arrives at Centre Court chasing yet another slice of history after becoming the first German man since Boris Becker to win a Grand Slam title, beating Flavio Cobolli in a gripping five-set French Open final. Having spent years carrying the tag of the best player never to win a major, the 29-year-old now has the opportunity to become the first man in the Open Era to follow up his maiden Slam triumph with another title at the very next major.
Yet, unlike in Paris, where he faced a first-time Grand Slam finalist, Sunday's challenge promises to be far tougher. Sinner has not only emerged as the dominant force in men's tennis over the last two seasons, but he has also enjoyed near-total control over his rivalry with Zverev.
The Italian has beaten the German in each of their last nine meetings, transforming what was once a closely fought battle into a daunting mental hurdle. More remarkably, Sinner has not dropped a set in any of their last six meetings, winning 14 straight sets against Zverev heading into the Wimbledon final.
SINNER INTO ANOTHER WIMBLEDON FINAL
If there were any lingering doubts over Sinner's form after his heartbreaking defeat in Paris, the defending champion has answered them emphatically at the All England Club.
The 24-year-old delivered arguably his most complete performance of the fortnight in Friday's semi-final, brushing aside seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Sinner fired 16 aces, blasted 40 winners and, astonishingly, faced only one break point throughout the match.
The straight-sets win was all the more impressive given Djokovic's run to a record-extending 15th Wimbledon semi-final. The Serb had survived a marathon five-hour-and-15-minute quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime, the longest quarter-final in Wimbledon history, only to find himself overwhelmed by Sinner's relentless baseline game and clinical serving.
Sinner's march to a second successive Wimbledon final has underlined why he remains the man to beat on grass. With every passing round, the defending champion has looked sharper, calmer and increasingly comfortable on the surface that brought him glory a year ago.
For Zverev, the numbers make grim reading. Nine consecutive defeats are difficult enough to overcome; the fact that Sinner has not conceded a single set during that run only magnifies the scale of the challenge awaiting the German.
CAN ZVEREV SNAP THE STREAK?
Zverev's own journey to a maiden Wimbledon final has been impressive. Seeded third, the German has produced some of his best tennis on grass, sealing his place in Sunday's title clash with a straight-sets victory over British wildcard Arthur Fery in the semi-finals. His booming serve and aggressive groundstrokes proved too much for the home favourite.
The timing could hardly be better. Freed from the burden of chasing that elusive first Slam, Zverev appears to be playing with a renewed sense of confidence and clarity. His powerful serve and willingness to attack make him a natural fit on grass when everything clicks.
But Wimbledon presents a challenge unlike the one he faced in Paris. Roland Garros pitted him against an inexperienced Cobolli in his maiden major final; Centre Court will offer no such comfort. Across the net stands the reigning champion and world No. 1, a player who has repeatedly found answers to Zverev's questions.
Sinner's dominance extends beyond the scoreline. Their recent meetings have highlighted the Italian's ability to absorb Zverev's power and redirect it with interest, particularly through his backhand. Time and again, the top seed has looked physically fresher and tactically a step ahead whenever the pair have shared the court.
For Zverev, Sunday's final is about more than adding another trophy to his cabinet. It is a chance to prove that his Roland Garros breakthrough was not a one-off and that he belongs alongside Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz at the summit of men's tennis.
Ending a nine-match losing streak against the world's best player, however, may prove to be the toughest challenge of his career.
