The 71st National Film Awards, honouring the best of Indian cinema in 2023, were announced today, August 1, by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Among the major winners are Vikrant Massey and Shah Rukh Khan, who have been awarded Best Actor for their critically acclaimed performances in '12th Fail' and 'Jawan', respectively. Rani Mukerji has been named Best Actress for her powerful role in 'Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway'.

Directed by veteran filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, '12th Fail' is a biographical drama based on the real-life story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who rose from poverty to become an IPS officer. Vikrant Massey’s portrayal of Sharma earned widespread acclaim and now, a prestigious National Film Award. The film also features Medha Shankar in a key role.

Released in September 2023, 'Jawan', directed by Atlee, became a blockbuster with a mix of action, emotion, and star power. Shah Rukh Khan plays two roles - Azad, a jailer who secretly acts as a vigilante, and Vikram Rathore, his older version.

Together with a team of strong female fighters, they fight against corruption and social injustice. The film also features Nayanthara as a tough cop trying to stop them, and Vijay Sethupathi as the powerful villain Kaali, who adds serious tension to the story.

'Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway', starring Rani Mukerji, is a 2023 Hindi film based on the real story of Sagarika Chakraborty, whose children were taken away by Norway's child welfare services due to cultural differences like hand-feeding and sleeping with kids.

Rani plays Debika, a strong Bengali mother who bravely fights the system that sees her Indian parenting style as wrong. Her powerful performance was praised by critics and also won her a 'Filmfare Critics Award'.

The jury officially submitted the list of awardees to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday, with Union Minister of State Dr. L Murugan and Information & Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju present at the event. The awards ceremony is available for public viewing through the Ministry’s official live-stream.
