Jannik Sinner strengthened his credentials as one of the top contenders to win the French Open after clinching the Madrid Open title. On Monday, May 3, the World No.1 defeated Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 in the final in just 57 minutes.

With the victory, Sinner became the first man in history to win five consecutive Masters titles. He is also the first player ever to claim the first four Masters events of the season. Having won 13 consecutive sets, nine straight matches, and 65 consecutive service games, Sinner is becoming increasingly dangerous ahead of Roland Garros.

The Italian star has now won 28 consecutive matches in Masters events, along with 56 of the last 58 sets he has played at this level. Sinner has also won 45 of his last 47 matches, showcasing remarkable consistency.

“I started the match very well, breaking straightaway. He was not playing his best tennis today, so I just tried to go with my front foot and I’m very happy obviously about the level I’m playing. Incredible winning another title like this, that means a lot to me. It’s been another incredible tournament,” Sinner said after the match.

HOW SINNER TOOK DOWN ZVEREV

Sinner’s dominance in Sunday’s final was evident in the numbers. He converted all four break points, faced none on his own serve, and won an impressive 93 per cent of his first-serve points. From the baseline, he combined power with precision to keep Zverev under constant pressure.

Sinner raced to a 5-0 lead early on and never allowed his opponent to settle. He sealed the win with authority, breaking again before serving out to love. The victory also extended his head-to-head lead over Zverev to 10-4, continuing a streak of commanding straight-sets wins in recent months.

Sinner has already claimed eight of the nine Masters 1000 titles, with only the Italian Open in Rome eluding him so far. The 24-year-old now has an opportunity to complete the Career Golden Masters on home soil at the 2026 edition of the tournament, which gets underway next week. He is aiming to join Novak Djokovic as the only player to achieve the Career Golden Masters.
