Four people were killed, and three others were injured after an SUV they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a gorge before falling into a local river in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, officials said.

A woman and a child escaped death as they were ejected out of the falling car. The incident took place on Thursday when the driver of the vehicle lost control of it.

The accident took place between 4 pm and 5 pm on the Dewal-Ghes motor road. A total of seven people were aboard the car when the mishap occurred.

Teams of the police and the district administration, aided by locals, launched a rescue operation immediately after information about the accident was received.

The bodies of all four people who lost their lives have been recovered. Meanwhile, all the injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
