Kia likely testing the Seltos hybrid, launch expected in 2027

Kia's upcoming Seltos Hybrid has been spotted testing in India once again, hinting at a possible 2027 launch with a strong hybrid powertrain, improved fuel efficiency and familiar styling.

Kia appears to be stepping up work on the hybrid version of the Seltos, as a heavily camouflaged test mule has once again been spotted undergoing road tests in India. While the second-generation Seltos only recently entered the Indian market earlier this year, the fresh round of testing hints that the brand could already be preparing a more fuel-efficient hybrid derivative for launch in the coming years.

The latest prototype, carrying temporary red registration plates from Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO, was seen with extensive camouflage covering most of the bodywork. Interestingly, the SUV retains the familiar proportions and profile of the current Seltos, suggesting Kia may not dramatically alter the design for the hybrid version. Instead, the focus is likely to be on the powertrain underneath.

One of the most noticeable details from the spy shots is the underfloor structure visible near the rear section. This has sparked speculation that the vehicle could be housing a high-voltage battery pack, a strong indication that the test mule may indeed be the upcoming Seltos Hybrid.

Kia and Hyundai have been developing a new-generation strong hybrid system for their midsize SUVs globally. Kia recently showcased a hybrid version of the Seltos for international markets, and the same technology is expected to eventually make its way to India.

Unlike plug-in hybrids, the upcoming Seltos Hybrid is expected to use a self-charging setup. In such systems, the battery replenishes itself through regenerative braking and energy recovery while driving, eliminating the need for external charging infrastructure. The SUV should also be capable of driving short distances in pure electric mode at low speeds.
Industry expectations suggest the hybrid setup could pair Hyundai-Kia’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor. An automatic gearbox is likely to be standard.

The addition of a hybrid battery pack could lead to a few compromises in practicality. Reports indicate the hybrid Seltos may offer slightly reduced boot space and could even skip a full-size spare wheel to accommodate the electrified hardware.

However, the payoff would come in the form of significantly improved fuel economy and lower running costs, areas where strong hybrids are gaining increasing popularity among Indian buyers.

The Seltos has already established itself as one of the most feature-rich offerings in the segment, and the hybrid version is expected to build on that appeal.

The current Seltos lineup spans a broad price range in India, catering to both mainstream and premium SUV buyers. The hybrid variant is expected to sit above the conventional petrol models, potentially commanding a premium of around 1 lakh or slightly more depending on trim levels and equipment.

If launched with competitive pricing, the Seltos Hybrid could become a strong alternative for customers seeking better efficiency without switching entirely to electric vehicles. With rising fuel prices and improving acceptance of hybrid technology, Kia may be targeting a sweet spot between traditional ICE SUVs and full EVs.

At present, the hybrid Seltos is expected to arrive in India sometime in 2027, although Kia has not officially confirmed the timeline yet.
