Yashasvi Jaiswal has risen to his career-best No.2 in the latest ICC rankings for batters in Tests after his heroics in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Although he did not win the Player of the Match award, it was his century that contributed heavily in India’s 295-run win and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Jaiswal moved two places up in the rankings and also attained his career-best rating of 825 in his career. England’s Joe Root remained the top-ranked Test batter with 903 rating points.
Jaiswal failed in the first innings in Perth after Mitchell Starc dismissed him for a duck. But in the second, the young left-hander showed his class and tormented the Aussie bowling attack. The southpaw scored 161 runs off 297 balls with the help of 15 fours and three sixes.
Jaiswal also put on 201 runs for the opening wicket with KL Rahul, who opened the batting in the absence of Rohit Sharma. The 22-year-old has had a tremendous 2024 thus far, having notched 1280 runs from 12 Tests at an average of 58.18 with three hundreds and seven fifties to his name.
Overall, in 15 Tests since his debut in the West Indies last year, Jaiswal has made 1568 runs with a top score of 214 not out. Jaiswal also holds the record for being the youngest Indian with a century in T20Is when he achieved the landmark at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year.
