- David Payne ruled out due to ankle injury
- Coetzee has 67 international wickets for South Africa
The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have made a decisive move to strengthen their fast-bowling stocks for the business end of the IPL 2026 season. The franchise officially announced the signing of South African speedster Gerald Coetzee as an injury replacement for left-arm seamer David Payne. Payne, who had recently joined the squad as a cover himself, has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a persistent ankle injury.
Payne’s tenure with the Orange Army was brief, featuring in just two matches where he managed to pick up two wickets. However, the injury has forced SRH to look for a different profile of bowler, leading them to the raw pace and aggression of Coetzee. The Proteas pacer joins the Hyderabad camp for a fee of Rs 2 Crore.
Coetzee arrives with an impressive international resume. He has represented South Africa in 4 Tests, 14 ODIs, and 18 T20Is, racking up a combined 67 international wickets. Known for his ability to hit the deck hard and clock speeds north of 145 kmph, Coetzee is expected to provide the mid-innings breakthroughs that SRH has occasionally lacked this season.
He is no stranger to the IPL environment either, having previously represented both the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) across 14 matches, where he accounted for 15 wickets. Beyond his primary skill with the ball, Coetzee is also a useful lower-order batter capable of clear-the-rope hits—a handy trait for a team that values depth.
The timing of Coetzee’s arrival is intriguing, as Sunrisers Hyderabad have recently discovered a goldmine of domestic talent. Uncapped pacers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain have become the talk of the town after their sensational debuts against the Rajasthan Royals, where they tore through a formidable batting lineup. Adding Coetzee’s experience and express pace to this mix gives head coach Daniel Vettori a formidable variety of options.
The team is also closely monitoring the fitness of Pat Cummins. While the Australian captain has been cleared to return to bowling after recovering from a back issue, reports suggest he may not be rushed back into the XI immediately, with a potential return date targeted for late April.
As we head further into the season, SRH is preparing for a massive clash against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal. The match, scheduled for Saturday, April 18, will be a true test for the updated SRH bowling unit as they look to maintain their winning momentum in front of a home crowd. Whether Coetzee is integrated into the playing XI immediately remains to be seen, but his presence undoubtedly makes Hyderabad a more dangerous prospect in the long haul.
