In Short

  • Hanuman Ansh maintained double-digit daily earnings even after a month in cinemas
  • Its fifth Wednesday added Rs 10.25 crore, extending an already rare run
  • Word of mouth transformed a quiet release into a major devotional draw

Hanuman Ansh is no longer just a surprise hit. The devotional drama has become a full-fledged box-office phenomenon, and its extraordinary run is now spilling overseas.

The Vishal Chaturvedi directorial has already crossed the Rs 150 crore mark in India nett, despite opening to a shockingly modest Rs 10 lakh. Now, ahead of its international release on September 11, the film has recorded $100,000 in pre-sales across North America, signalling that its word-of-mouth momentum could travel well beyond India. Hombale Films is handling the film's overseas distribution.

The North American advance is another remarkable chapter in the story of a film that had virtually no conventional star power or major promotional machinery behind it. Made on a reported budget of around Rs 2 crore, Hanuman Ansh has gone from being an easy-to-miss release to one of the year's most extraordinary theatrical success stories.

And the latest India numbers underline just how wild its run has become.

According to Sacnilk, Hanuman Ansh has collected Rs 153.13 crore nett in India by Day 34. The film added another Rs 10.25 crore on its fifth Wednesday, maintaining double-digit daily collections even after spending more than a month in theatres.

That is particularly staggering considering where the film started. Hanuman Ansh opened on August 7 with just Rs 10 lakh, with its first week bringing in only Rs 1.08 crore. Its second week was even smaller, contributing Rs 40 lakh. For a film that had barely registered at the box office in its opening fortnight, what happened next was almost unprecedented.

The turnaround began when word of mouth kicked in. By its fourth week, Hanuman Ansh had exploded, collecting Rs 61 crore in a single week. Its fifth week has been even more astonishing, with the film continuing to pull audiences into theatres instead of collapsing as most films do at that stage.

The film's fifth weekend alone brought in around Rs 49.25 crore nett, while its fifth Sunday collection of Rs 22.75 crore set another remarkable benchmark for its late theatrical run.

In other words, Hanuman Ansh has achieved what would have seemed almost impossible when it opened: a film that started at Rs 10 lakh a day is now comfortably above Rs 150 crore.

Its return on investment makes the story even more extraordinary. With a reported budget of just around Rs 1.8 crore, the film's theatrical earnings represent a staggering multiplier, turning what looked like a tiny devotional release into one of the year's biggest sleeper blockbusters. Sacnilk has described it as one of the most extraordinary box-office turnarounds in Bollywood history.

And the run is showing little sign of immediately slowing down. With the film already at Rs 153.14 crore net as of Day 35's live figures, Hanuman Ansh is now firmly eyeing the Rs 200-crore mark.

What makes the phenomenon even more fascinating is that there was no traditional star vehicle driving it. The film's theatrical journey has instead been powered by its subject, devotional appeal and, above all, audiences convincing other audiences to watch it.

Now, with Hanuman Ansh heading overseas and carrying $100,000 in North American pre-sales before its September 11 release, the little film that once struggled to find an audience is getting a much bigger stage.

It will hit the overseas market on September 11.
